Meteor over Utah
Although usually pitch black outside at night, this still image shows just how bright that meteor was.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t was just another November evening at my house in Utah in 2009. I had recently set up my automated security cameras that were activated by motion and light. I went to bed was usual, but was awakened in the middle of the night by very bright light coming from the windows. It was so bright that it flashed as brightly as the noonday sun for a few seconds. I realized right away that it must have been a meteor. Since it only lasted a couple of seconds, by the time I got up and looked out the window, it was long gone.

Meteror over UtahThe next day, I read the reports on the news channels about the meteor and i saw various pictures and videos that people happened to record. That made me wonder if my security cameras happened to capture it. Sure enough, they did. The video above is the stream from my front security camera on that November 18, 2009 evening. It was completely pitch black outside, but the still image from the video shows just how brightly it lit up the sky for that brief moment.

I posted this short video on YouTube and I recently was contacted by media company wanting to use the clip in a documentary. It will be aired on the Discovery Science Channel some time the spring.
